Each year in grade 10 I do Pen and Ink techniques because it's neat to switch it up from pencil value shading and have them play with different mark making techniques.
This is an intro sketchbook that I give before their main project is assigned.
It goes through:
=a surface to work on (either their sketchbooks or watercolour paper), a permanent markers, inks (watercolours or acrylic inks), paint brush, cup of water, paper towel
=a mark making sampler where they play with different ways of creating marks (pointillism, hatching, cross hatching etc.)
=practicing value where they apply these mark making techniques to shapes and explore how to create light/medium/dark tones (KEY for their project!)
=6 main ink techniques (walks them through what each one is)
=suggestions for extra experiments (they love these!!)
=adding value to one of their shapes from the previous step
A MINI RUBRIC
-in case you wanted a quick evaluation from this, or you could just not assess it, depending on your class needs.
I hope this helps!
I find this activity absolutely critical to do before they start their final project where they transform a photograph through pen and ink techniques.
They turn out AMAZING!
