In each of my visual arts classes I have my students make their own sketchbook. I introduce a different style of sketchbook in every class, which introduces them to a range of sketchbook styles and encourages them to take ownership of their sketchbooks by decorating and personalizing them.
Designing a book cover, or book jacket, for a pre-made sketchbook is the focus of this project pack. If you are on a budget, have students bring in their own hardback sketchbooks. Through this project students look at the role book covers play in selling books. In addition, they learn how to form and decorate their own cover. They are encouraged to design it in a way that connects the entire cover as one design, while still maintaining a focal point on the front. All in all this project pack includes:
-Book cover PowerPoint
-Lesson plan, including big idea, goals, objectives, supply list, and step by step instructions.
-Book cover how to handout
