Welcome to the SMocKroom and the first step towards developing your students' observational, descriptive and art making skills, through a rigorous and engaging curriculum. These complete art units are designed within a comprehensive instructional sequence, taking your students from simply looking at art to targeting specific characteristics of art works and artists by using visual thinking strategies, Venn diagrams, brainstorming, sketching and retelling. Students not only build their background knowledge about art but also use skills targeted within the Common Core State Standards for ELA, by using similar language and skills, such as critical thinking and close reading of informational text. There is no better way to grow artists than with a holistic approach to visual arts. This lesson focuses on the art of Wayne Thiebaud and connects to the students' understanding of geometry through the investigation and practice of creating forms.
