I am trying something new this year. I wanted to put together a VISUAL AGENDA. Everyday students can know what to expect in the structure of class and have the visual cues to go with it. I am going to teach the structure of the class in the first weeks of school so that they know the different areas. Warm up (the dreaded bellringer), R.a.P the review of past material and the preview of today's focus through higher order questioning and classroom quizzing, W.o.W. words of wisdom (where the learning takes place... notes and reading - acquiring knowledge, Work it out (activities and practice of the knowledge they have gathered), Shout-outs because kids need praise and positive reinforcement - great job Darius for remaining calm and seated hip hop hooray - oh, and then minute to win it... a series of questions they will have the last minute of class to answer and a source of competition between the classes to the first class that gets 100 questions - a prize shall be had. Oh and not to be forgotten, the oh so important brain break. You've lost the crowd and it's time for redemption - teaching style - break out the Brain BREAK sign and take a break - play a school appropriate song or an old school - heads up 7up or 4 corners. I think it will be a blast to set the tone like this.
Be blessed people :)
