I created this desk mat for kids who benefit from having a personal, visual timetable on their desk at school. The design allows them to have access to the middle of their desk for working, but also to have handy references nearby as well.
The documents are in Word format and customizable to suit your students’ needs.
The kit includes:
• Days, dates, and months
• 5 happy faces and 5 sad faces to remind students to raise their hand and discourage them from interrupting and/or distracting others during a lesson
• Problem solving star chart. My students get a sticker for each problem solved independently. When they earn 5 stickers they get a prize from my prize box.
• I have not included time table cards as it is best to use the same images you currently use in your classroom. Consistency is key.
My desk mats are laminated and I used contact paper to stick them down. I then used Velcro pieces on the date cards, problem solving chart, timetable, happy faces and spelling words, as these change often and/or daily. My students love changing the cards every morning. It provides them with independence and accountability. It also forces them to pay attention to the spelling of days, dates, months and activities. This is especially important if you have students with low confidence in reading and letter ID.
