I use this activity during the initial phases of fluency / stuttering treatment – especially with younger children. Before a child can start using fluency strategies – they need to know what disfluencies are!
This activity can be used either for self-identification, or for identifying disfluencies in others (i.e., smooth vs. bumpy speech of the SLP).
This download includes:
-four different activity mats - the same mat, but for different numbers of participants (1-4)
-1 page of colored smooth/bumpy cards
-1 page of black and white smooth/bumpy cards
This can be used in so many ways, but this is how I use it with my students as I begin to work on identifying disfluencies.
1.Give the child one of each card (a "smooth" card and a "bumpy" card), and keep one of each for yourself.
2.I begin by using either smooth or bumpy (pseudostuttered) speech in a single word and ask the child to place the correct card on the mat. I then place my own selection next to theirs so we can see if we agree.
3.In later stages, I will have the child use this with their own speech. I might have them say a word or sentence, and then identify their productions as smooth or bumpy.
