# Visual Fractions – Adding Mixed Numbers

Supporting document included

Welcome to Visual Fractions – Adding Mixed Numbers!

Using this method, students will learn to ADD MIXED NUMBERS using only visual models, that is, WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO ADD!

They also are introduced to FINDING COMMON DENOMINATORS WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO MULTIPLY!

They are also introduced to SIMPLIFYING FRACTIONS WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO DIVIDE!

THIS IS A PURELY VISUAL METHOD USING DRAWINGS RATHER THAN ARITHMETIC.

Students gain a better understanding of fractions by working at the pictorial/iconic level and multiply fractions. Some methods of drawing visual models are impractical or confusing. They can even convert and simplify mixed numbers and fractions using only visual models.

This video could be used as the lecture part of a flipped classroom lesson. It could be shared with individual students who struggle with understanding fraction basics, it could be used as the lecture segment of your classroom lesson, or it could be used to inform you and your colleagues about a new and exciting way to work with fractions.

The Visual Fractions method is great for students new to learning fractions because it allows them to have a deeper understanding of what is happening when working with abstract concepts like fractions. It is also great for older students who still struggle with basic multiplication and division, but still are expected to know and perform operations with fractions.

I hope you like it and see its usefulness in your classroom.
