As teachers, we want our students to be able to look up the answer to their questions- but in music, we are asking them to read an entirely new language! When a student doesn't know what a symbol is called, looking it up in the glossary or music dictionary doesn't work. That's where the "Musical Symbols We Know" worksheet comes in!
This worksheet is a great way to get started for back to school. It is a quick and easy print-and-go worksheet for use in the beginning band/orchestra classroom. Each student receives a copy of the appropriate worksheet (correct clef and band/orchestra designation) for his/her instrument. As different musical symbols are learned, students write in the name of the symbol and definition in the space provided. There are also a few blank spaces where you can add in other symbols as you see fit. The worksheet is meant to be stored in each student's music folder, giving them a quick visual reference guide to musical symbols. This could also be used for assessment as a quiz form to check knowledge of the symbols at the end of the year!
