This activity is designed to help Spanish 2 students write using both the imperfect and the preterite. For the first half of the activity, students choose a favorite special day or holiday from their past, and write in the general sense about those holidays, using a visual map that demonstrates how each detail they write is connected to the event that they are discussing. In the second half of the activity, students follow a similar visual map in order to talk about one specific event that stands out, answering questions in the imperfect and preterite to prompt an understanding of background set up and sequence of actions. Finally, the students answer questions in English about what they learned regarding pret v imperfect.

This is a good activity to use to introduce the preterite v imperfect, as it gives the students a chance to induce some of the rules that govern the use of the past tenses and their differences. I use this in conjunction with Realidades 2 4b, but it is a good stand-alone activity, and one that leads to writing a paragraph with detail about a specific past event.
