Instructions & Purpose

Learners use these cards to match & sort visual representations of multiplication expressions with their visual equivalents

The purpose of these cards is to encourage math talk and conceptual understanding around the skill of multiplication

It is appropriate for any level of multiplication

Cards can easily be modified based on readiness

Modifications

Present only certain cards

Ask for more than one connection. For example, could an image be seen as 6 groups of 8 and it could be seen as 6 groups of 9 if looked at differently.

Provide one representation and have a competition to find the most numeric equivalents

Whole group, small group, pairs

Math Talk

The purpose of this activity is NOT to get right answers; encourage math talk

Ask learners to explain their thinking

Encourage learners to talk to each other

Ask questions if learners share inaccuracies in their responses

Listen

Encourage multiple ways of seeing the pictures

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
