The purpose of a visual necklace is to support students with autism and cognitive impairments understand language. When students with disabilities are given a verbal request, it is often not understood. Our spoken language may be too complex OR a student may need extra time to process that verbal request. SO, a visual “picture” of a spoken word is extremely important. It aides in the understanding of language and it offers time for a student to process language. If you think about it, a “visual picture” does not disappear as quickly as a “spoken word” does!
