Student-friendly visual rubrics for Informational Writing based on Lucy Calkin's Writing Units of Study. This rubric combines the ones provided by the Teacher's College for both first grade, allowing first graders to evaluate their writing against first grade expectations and to strive to perform above grade level. The rubric uses the same requirements, wording, and images as the ones provided by the Teacher's College online resources. On-level expectations are followed by frowning and smiling faces for students to color in and the second grade standards are followed by a star.

In my classroom, I laminate these and add them into student writing folders. My students use their dry erase markers to go through the rubric on their own, with a partner, or with me.

I also have visual rubrics available for opinion and narrative writing. Please note that the second page is the same for each of these files, as the conventions expectations are consistent across units.
