This writing rubric has been super useful in our classroom and allows young students to visually know exactly how they are doing!
When a student finishes the final draft of their work, they first self-evaluate by using the "Me" column. They circle the smiley face that best fits how they felt they did regarding each item:
Then, students trade the rubric and grade a friend's work. Finally, the teacher fills in the final column. After adding up the number of smiley faces, the score correlates with a grade (bottom left).
My students love having a say in their grade and understanding exactly what they need to work on next time. They are often surprisingly honest and thoughtful!
This resource also includes evaluation expectations for students to keep in mind as they check one another's work.
