Product Description
This is a student-centered grammar activity in which students explore or review the use of Me gusta and Me encanta with singular nouns in contrast to the use of Me gustan and Me encantan with the use of plural nouns.

In this activity, the teacher gives all students a card and tells them to keep it face down. She explains that some students have main idea cards (A mi me gusta...) or supporting details (la manzana). She does not tell the students what the theme of the activity is (me gusta/encanta singular vs. me gustan/encantan plural). It is their job to walk around the room and communicate to figure out what the grammar "rule" is without teacher instruction.

Students must use problem-solving skills to figure out how to sort out the cards since the teacher has not explained what is on the cards. For example, they might see all drinks and group together as drinks. They raise their hand for you to check, and you tell them to keep searching. Or, they realize their is no main idea (Las bebidas) on their own and keep searching. They may group together by breakfast or by masculine/feminine. Encourage them to persist and keep searching. After a few minutes have passed, you can begin to give clues such as how many people in a group, how many main ideas total, or how it's NOT grouped (ie: not by drinks).

After students find their group members, they create a kinesthetic/visual web in which the person with the main idea stands in the middle and all students with supporting details point towards the main idea. The teacher approves and tells them to explain why they have arranged themselves that way in a presentation after all the groups are ready. (We have "Me gustan" in the middle and foods that are plural pointing to it. That means that if the noun/food is plural, we say "me gustan..." not "me gusta...").

You could also play this to review this concept before a quiz or test rather than to introduce the concept. I use vocabulary webs (no grammar) to review.

There are 32 cards plus a few blank cards. Take away/add cards as needed for your class size. You need exactly the same amount of cards as students. Students cannot take more than one card.

I use this activity with Realidades 1, Chapter 4 on food. Students already know how to use Me gusta + infinitive, make nouns plural, and are working on food vocabulary before they complete the activity.
