Each page has a short lyric from the song The Princess Who Saved Herself by Johnathan Coulton. The students are to read only their part and draw what they are visualizing to help them comprehend. In the end, they all get to put the story together and see the importance.
NOTE: As a class, we established what the princess would look like (attire, hair, etc.), so that our book would be consistent in that in the end.
Personally, I differentiated each section for my kids---high level-lower level readers, and based on who would enjoy each part (for instance, I gave some of the more dragon-geared parts to the boys I knew wouldn't me impressed by having a princess part, etc.) We worked on them for a couple of days, with and without the music playing, and in the end I put everything into a video using Windows Movie Maker. They absolutely loved it!
The rubric included helped "grade" each students' work. It also served an important purpose for their self-monitoring, because they were able to consult it throughout their work.
Song and lyrics by Johnathan Coulton. I own no part of the song or lyrics.
