Description
This video demonstrates the use of a double number line to solve rate problems. The double number line is an excellent model to increase students' conceptual understanding of rates and rate problems. The video is accompanied by guided notes and practice problems, and walks students through the notes and problems. The material is chunked, so students first learn about and practice rate problems requiring multiplication, and then after a pause for practice, they return to see rate problems requiring division. It may also be split into two days of instruction and practice.
This video concentrates on basic, one-step rate problems where one number is a factor or multiple of the other. [In video II, students progress to two-step ratio problems requiring deeper mathematical reasoning].
This may be used as a blended learning video, for students' at-home use, or in a stations or centers activity. Blended learning videos allow students to return to the video, rewind, and watch the parts with which they need help. They are also excellent tools for involving parents in student learning, and for students who miss classroom instruction.
