VoBACKulary for CVC Words

So you are tapping out CVC words, but some of the words your kiddos may not understand or know the meaning. So you quickly explain it or ask if someone knows the meaning of the word and then actually there may be more than one meaning for the word and by now your English Language Learners are completely confused and they are still trying to tap out and say the word. If you teach Wilson Fundations, this may happen quite a bit. When I taught this program we always had fun by discussing the meaning of the word and using it in different sentences to show the multiple meaning of these simple CVC words, yet confusing at times.

A fun way to get your kiddos to think about these words is to play a simple game during morning meeting or as a class game whenever you need a Brain Break. This can even be played in a small group if you model and practice it first…perhaps a game during stations. I have included a sheet that can be used to show accountability if you decide to simply have children pick random words out of a basket and show the meaning of the word or words. Another idea is to play the game as an activity during your morning meeting and then post a few of the words in a station with the response sheets and have them fill in the sheets as spill over activity or Word Work for that day.

VoBACKulary Game Directions

The children sit in a circle around the edges of the rug.
One child is chosen to go to the middle of the rug.
The teacher or another student tapes a word onto the child’s back in a place where s/he can not see it Middle of back).
The child with the word turns slowly around so everyone can see the word.
Children then raise their hands to give him/her a clue about the word. The clue can be a meaning, a phonics clue, a synonym or an antonym, but they may not say the beginning sound or the word itself. You can add to the rules as you see how your students react to the game.
The student in the center then receives 5 clues to guess the word. Then another student takes a turn ( I always use my picking sticks for these types of game to ensure fairness).
Thank you for purchasing, downloading, browsing, and inspiring. I hope this brings a little sunshine your way! ENJOY!
