As a Welcome Back to School vocabulary lesson, this presentation offers a variety of formal and informal terms for greetings and leave-takings, as well as additional resources to expand upon cultural topics. Visual learners will appreciate the colorful graphics, and for beginning Spanish students there are English translations and a Spanish-English glossary-at-a-glance. For independent practice, students have access to a Quizlet flashcard set to hear those terms in native speaker pronunciation, play matching and spelling games to further reinforce learning, and take quizzes on the terms to self-assess. Other links include children's literature in Spanish (for the Teacher to develop readings related to "saludos y despedidas"), and links to biographical info on famous Latinos in politics (Judge Sotomayor) and graphic arts (Mafalda cartoonist Quino). For the musically inclined, there are links to YouTube videos of pop music groups Camila & Reik (a lyric video for a sing-along related to the vocabulary terms, which can also be studied as additional high-frequency vocabulary) and merengueros Omar Enrique (Venezuelan) & Eddy Herrera (Dominican) for leading a dance class or a discussion on genres in Spanish-language music.
