Four vocabulary acquisition strategies with visuals.
I used this with an 8th grade student with receptive/expressive language disorder. His vocabulary was significantly below grade level and he had difficulty acquiring new vocabulary taught in sessions and class. When we got to words he did not know, we would look up definitions and he would choose which strategy he wanted to use to help him remember the definition.
1. Actions paired with words - Gesture or pantomime associated with the meaning
2. Word associations - Thinking of a synonym, or placing the other vocabulary words out in a field and quizzing "which word goes with __?"
3. Describe a time when... - Personal connection to the vocabulary term
4. Sentence completion - Provide sentences the student can complete (orally or writing) using the vocabulary term.
The visuals and example of using the strategies with the word 'wonder' can help to remember what the strategies are.
