This short booklet is designed to help educators equip their learners with the ability to apply a range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. The strategies provided for include drawing on prior experience, interacting with other readers and writers, knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, word identification strategies, and understanding textual features.
It consists of four graphic organizers pre-formatted for teacher convenience. These activity sheets facilitate the students’ use of Vocabulary Self-Selection, Word Mapping (also referred to as Semantic Mapping, Concept mapping and Word Clusters), Graphic Morphemic Analysis and Vocabulary Journals.
The sheets also lend themselves to facilitating differentiated instruction for English language learners and students with special needs in that they can be used to help ESL students connect with their home language for a greater understanding of new words, offer opportunities for both groups to interact with others through group work and class discussions, introduce visual elements into lessons on word relationships, encourage students to create their own individualized informative products which can be used as reference and study material, and provide for the delivery of numerous mini-lessons.
