Product Description

I differentiated vocabulary instruction for my students, so I needed word study activities that would work for ANY vocabulary list. The activities also had to be something that students could work on independently while I was meeting with other children during reading or writing workshop time. So I got to work creating fun, engaging activities that would help my students learn their words while also meeting the demands of our state standards.

I put all nine of the activities on a choice menu so my students could take some ownership over the learning, providing me another way to individualize instruction.

Just like the activities in volumes one, two and three, and four, in this fifth volume, you’ll find that these activities aren’t like the more traditional fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching words to definitions types of activities. They are activities that have been designed to allow for more creativity, more flexibility, and more FUN in your student’s vocabulary learning lives.

What's special about Volume FIVE? These activities were crafted with the study of Greek and Latin morphemes in mind. This volume includes a new (editable) graphic organizer, as well as a pre-test and self-ratings scale made especially for vocabulary learning.

These activities are rooted in research-based best practices from educational experts and researchers like Robert Marzano, Susan Winebrenner, Michael Graves, Isabelle Beck, and Kate Kinsella so that you can be sure that your students are maximizing their vocabulary learning as they work on these engaging activities.

If you’re facing a similar situation in your classroom, this just might be the thing you need to refresh your lesson plans and ignite the excitement in your students’ vocabulary learning lives!

PLEASE NOTE, this group of activities is part of a money-saving BUNDLE. You can find it here: Vocabulary Word Study Activities for Any Word List - Grades 4 - 6 BUNDLE

Here’s an overview of what you're getting—you’ll find specific details for each of the activities on subsequent pages.

Table of Contents on the next page for your convenience.

Nine Vocabulary Activities that can be used with any of your own vocabulary lists. FYI: Most activities in this pack were specifically designed to use with Greek and Latin morphemes so they may not work with regular lists. (lists are NOT provided in this resource).

Implementation notes with details and ideas for how each activity works, including some ideas for scaffolding and extension.

Full-Page Directions— Each of the activities has a full size page that can be printed on regular paper or card stock and then laminated for repeated use. They can also be printed two, four, or six to a page and put on a ring or glued inside student notebooks or ELA folders for quick reference. The instructions have been written directly to the students to be used independently at centers/stations, show on your whiteboard projector, or to post on a bulletin board. (This comes in handy for substitutes, too!)

Choice Menu—A full page menu with pictures of matching activity sheets to help with independent implementation. This allows for students to make decisions about which activities they work on to learn their vocabulary words. It is also a good tool to track completion of menu options, depending on how long you use the menu or how many activities you allow students to complete.

Rubric—The included rubric is intentionally broad-reaching so it can be used for all of the activities, but it is also designed to allow for feedback that is specific enough for encouraging students to make improvements on future projects.

BONUS MATERIALS

Greek and Latin Morphemes Organizer —graphic organizer pages to use for every word list. This choice is not included on the menu, since it is something I encourage all students to do for each vocabulary cycle. The organizers are sized so that they can be cut out and glued into a composition notebook, or left as is on the full page and either stapled, bound, or left loose. You’ll notice that there are five copies of the organizer, because each page has a tab to stagger in a notebook or notecard organizer, should you choose to use them this way.

Show What You Already Know—Pre-test—An easy-to-implement full-page document that students can use to self-rate their understanding of the vocabulary words you are planning to teach. Pre-testing allows you to tailor vocab lists to your students’ specific needs.

Self-Ratings Scale Poster—To help children use metacognitive skills as they reflect on their knowledge and skills, I’ve provided two versions of a watercolor self-ratings scale. The posters essentially reflect the same content, however, one includes more formal language, and one is a little more casual.
