This activity aligns with CCSS: Standard RL.8.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.
The English Language Arts Common Core State Standards state that our students must be able to read carefully, make inferences, and apply understanding of a text to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. In order to do this successfully students must be able to use context to help them determine the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words.
In this vocabulary activity, which I created for Chapters 5 and 6 of The Outsiders, students are asked to provide a logical definition for the boldfaced word. Before the students can complete this vocabulary activity however, you should present a lesson on the types of clues that writers provide such as: synonym clues, antonym clues, syllable clues (affixes: prefixes, roots, suffixes), and logic clues. I explain to my students that logic clues are basically common sense or “put-yourself-in-that situation” clues. The vocabulary activity requires the students to think critically. They will need to read each excerpts more than once. The vocabulary activity works well as a paired or small group activity because it encourages the students to share their knowledge and to start having discussions about words!
