Teaching vocabulary is crucial for building strong readers in your classroom. However, when looking for vocabulary curriculum, so much focuses on memorizing the words and definitions. I wanted to create something that was more exciting and hands on for the students.
Vocabulary Builder will help keep you and your students on track, engaged, and learning new words each week through fun and interactive activities! The words chosen are research-based and appear often on standardized tests!
The types of activities repeat each six weeks with different words to help encourage routine and independent learning.

What is Vocabulary Builder?
Vocabulary Builder is a year long vocabulary curriculum that paces your students to learn 150 important, grade-level words before the year is done. The students will not only know the meaning, but be able to use the words in their writing and understand the words in context while reading.
Where did I find the words?
The words are Common Core and TEKS research based words from the most frequently used words on standardized tests. I personally have cross-referenced my list with many other lists available for the different grade levels and know that these are important words for your students to know! Because of copyright laws, I could not pull from one list alone, but these words are frequently used on standardized tests and will benefit your students now and in the future!
How long does each lesson take?
Each lesson plan covers Monday- Friday. But each individual lesson should take no more than 5-10 minutes a day. Why? Because we have jam packed schedules as teachers, and students need constant exposure to new words but not a lengthy lesson. The students will see the words posted in your classroom and talk about the activities throughout the day. Each day you will revisit the words and the students will soak in the meanings and how to use those words.
Are there any reviews built in to these lessons?
Absolutely! Each sixth week of the six weeks is a review week. The students will be submerged in all of the words from the five previous weeks to help them maintain mastery of these words.
What does a week look like with Vocabulary Builder?
Well, I have provided two sample lesson plans for you, so check that out before purchasing! But, a week with vocabulary builder looks like this:

Will this really help my kids?
I taught for many years in a Title I school and used these techniques and practices with my students. I have a masters as a reading specialist and I know the importance of vocabulary exposure for young minds. Students need scaffolding when learning new words which is what my weekly schedule provides for them. This program sets your students up for success and makes prep low for you (the teacher.)
Each Tuesday and Wednesday also includes a NO PAPER OPTION for a more hands on experience or a PAPER OPTION for a more concrete experience.
In a few short weeks, you will see dramatic growth in the vocabulary of your students and the confidence they show when writing and speaking. Furthermore, you will see the students excited to do Vocabulary Builder each day!
