Math Vocabulary Binder and Word Wall Details:
In this product you will get pocket chart heading cards, over 100 math vocabulary words and definitions, and student recording forms to get your math vocabulary up and running! This product is geared towards Third Grade Math Common Core Standards but can certainly be implemented into other grade levels.
As you teach your math and come across math vocabulary, you will select a vocabulary word and definition card that matches what you are studying. You will introduce the vocabulary word and definition as the students record the information on their recording form. Afterwards, students will discuss examples of the given vocabulary word and write/draw a picture that represents the math word. This may not be a daily math task; however, should be used whenever new math vocabulary is introduced. After learning about the vocabulary word, you may place the word and definition cards onto your math word wall. Or you may wish to select a student to record the word, definition, and drawing/example on an index card. Then post the index cards on your wall to create a "student-made" math word wall! The kids love seeing their own work on the word wall! To finish, students will place their recording forms in a binder or three-prong folder and continuously add new vocabulary words as taught. When state testing is administered at the end of the year, the completed binder is an AWESOME review tool for students to use either at school or with parents at home!
A Word A Day Package Details:
The Common Core is putting great emphasis on vocabulary! Therefore, as a grade level, my teammates and I wanted to create a daily vocabulary practice.
Ways to Implement:
Use as morning work as students arrive to class.
Use as afternoon work or a cool down when students come back from recess.
Use in your Literacy Centers/Daily Five Word Work Stations.
Use for early finishers.
Use during a light break/snack time.
Use as an additional set of words for a spelling challenge word list.
Ideas for Use:
I introduce my students to four vocabulary words per week. I give my students a back-to-back copy of the student recording form every Monday (there are 4 work spaces, one for Monday-Thursday). Students complete one section per day during our snack/bathroom break time. Students are encouraged to use colored pencils in their pencil sketches to add more details. After our weekly spelling test (Friday), I recite the vocabulary words as added bonus words to our spelling test and include the bonus words in our spelling test scores. On the back side of our spelling test notebook paper, students then complete a quick oral vocabulary quiz. I simply give out the four definitions and students are required to record the matching vocabulary word. This is a quick quiz that is a separate vocabulary score.
Directions for both packages:
Print, laminate, and cut cards for durability.
Make multiple back-to-back copies of the student recording form.
Place all heading cards in a pocket chart. Place pocket chart at a convenient spot for all students to see from desks.
Store extra words and/or part of speech cards behind existing cards for easy daily use.
