This game is aligned to the common core standards! It can be used to target introduction of new vocabulary terms, how the terms
relate to synonyms and antonyms, shades of meaning for various words, idioms, and articulation carryover. Vocabulary terms were
chosen with careful attention paid to frequently occurring Tier 2 vocabulary words from the fourth to sixth grade curriculum. This
game can be used for small group instruction, speech therapy, and literacy instruction.
This game includes 27 shades of meaning synonym cards, 27 shades of meaning antonym cards, 27 idiom cards, and 27 antonym word pair cards.
How to Play: Vocabulary Burst is played in teams. Divide the students into two teams. One team will be presenting the clues and the other team will be trying to guess the answers. Choose a player from the first team presenting to call out the category (e.g., Shades of Meaning Synonyms) and the word in bold at the bottom of the card (e.g., bounce). After the category and bold print word have been read the timer will be set for one minute. The team that is guessing the answer will try to think of answers that would fit the
category while the presenting team keeps score of how many correct answers are given. Once the timer runs out points will be
tallied. The team should be given one point for every correct answer given. Read all answers on the card for reinforcement of vocabulary and articulation skills. The teams then switch roles for the next round.
The goal of the game is to gain as many points as possible in either a predetermined amount of time or be the first team to reach a predetermined score.
