A rich literary novel about the cycle of life deserves to be reborn with some fresh and engaging approaches to the study of vocabulary. The vocabulary rummy game reinforces the meaning and use of 17 words from throughout the novel.
The rummy game can be adapted for different age groups using rules the teacher selects: for older students, for instance, the vocabulary word itself cannot be uttered during the student's turn; matching cards are sought by describing the definition, synonyms, word origin or a "fill in the blank" sentence. (All of these facts, as well as a thumbnail image illustrating the meaning of the word, are printed on the cards.) For younger students or English Language Learners, suggestions are included to simplify or enliven the rules.
Expanding students' vocabulary is a never-ending task, and this game combines contextual use of words (often including modified sentences from the Where The Lilies Bloom novel) with aspects of each word's origins, synonyms and definition -- all candy-coated in a card game. Students will enjoy this interactive approach to learning new words, along with the cartoonish clip art on each card. Those students who need additional practice can take a set of cards home and use them as flash cards.
Purchasers: Please let me know in the comments whether you would be interested in additional decks of vocabulary cards based on Where The Lilies Bloom. I have additional materials for three more sets of cards, but they are not yet formatted.
My lessons are always created with Common Core standards in mind. Thank you for your consideration!
