This is a vocabulary categorization handout exercise that I use for my upper elementary classes. I usually assign a few of these worksheets at once and have them due a day or two later. I have assigned them in class as an exercise in the past and it usually takes between one and two hours (closer to one as they get used to the format).
This exercise challenges students to focus on understanding the meaning of a wide variety of words and match them to the column that has the like meaning. The addition of a miscellaneous column means that students cannot simply use process of elimination to solve the worksheet correctly. This worksheet requires that students look up the words that they do not understand in order to score perfectly.
I have spent a great deal of time focusing on drafting a vocabulary exercise that mixes in words that are relevant at multiple grade levels. This exercise very versatile because of this approach and may be used in grades 4-8.
