Do you struggle to provide your students with vocabulary homework that utilizes higher-order thinking skills, is easy enough for them to complete independently, yet still helps them achieve a higher level of retention and understanding of the words? I did! So I spent a summer researching vocabulary. I read, and read, and read; then I read some more. I read everything I could get my hands on from Isabel Beck research, to Neuroscience research. After all of that research I put together a homework system that was flexible enough to be used with any words I wanted. This program comes with NO WORD LISTS.
However, it does come with an awesome contract for homework choices. We all know that we get better “buy-in” from students when they have choices. Each night of homework is based on a choice of five different activities. The choices aren’t repeated. The Vocabulary Contract starts out with Monday and Tuesday homework focused on understanding the words and demonstrating their understanding in creative ways. As the week progresses homework focuses around everyday applications of the terms in real–life context and identifying them in appropriate situations. By Thursday the homework is creative application. It takes some time to teach them how to complete all the choices, but the reward is wonderful once they know how to complete the contract. Please remember that this is a flexible system that you can use any words with.
This bundle includes:
• Awesome Vocabulary Weekly Contract
• Resource Sheet- explains any of the more complicated choices. It includes examples and snapshots of the companion pages for reference. This is great for parents and older kids.
• Student Activity Pages-5 (The other activities are things students respond to, write about, or draw. They can complete those without a worksheet format)
