This is a collection of different vocabulary activities ready and prepared for use. This Smartboard will allow you to guide your students to understanding this vocabulary in an interactive way. There are five activities to challenge your students and aid in their understanding.
This SmartBoard includes:
Words in Context: Read the paragraph and have students discuss words in red. Hand out white boards or something to record information down on. Click through the next three slides and have them work in partners/groups to discuss what they think the definition of the word is and what clues led them to that conclusion. My answers are just suggestions. This activity aims at helping students build the skills needed to create definitions for words they don’t know in their own reading.
Match the word with Definition – this is a simple and quick check to gauge students understanding of the definitions. Whole class engagement – give every student a white board, read the definition and have students record their correct answer on the whiteboard.
Connecting to the word – Have students pair up and put 30-60 seconds on the clock. Tell students to come up with as many ideas about the word as they can. Have them work in partners/groups. Share out at the end of the activity. This activity allows students to discuss words and think about the word in different ways.
Discuss the word – Read the question and have students work in partners to answer using the sentence frame. Share out at the end. This activity aids further in student understanding of the word and the sentence frame allows students to be confident in their answers.
Word Cubed – This is a higher order thinking activity for vocabulary. Each word cube displays the focused word in the middle. The student will choose 3 synonyms, 3 antonyms, and decide which word doesn't belong from a word list. The student will then look at 4 phrases and decide which are examples and which are non-examples. As an added bonus and to aid in word association, there is a picture connected to each word.
