SAVOR (Subject Area Vocabulary Reinforcement Activity) is a great activity to use for all grade levels. For my particular activity, I geared it towards 5th grade. SAVOR is an excellent post-reading vocabulary learning procedure. It is intended for use with factual readings. I used vocabulary from the book Tale of Despereaux for this particular activity.
SAVOR would be a vocabulary activity that I would do with my students. The main focus for this activity is to combine research and rereading skills to identify similarities and differences among new terms taken from topics being studied in science, social studies, mathematics, health, history or another content area.
1) For the SAVOR strategy, the students will reinforce learning of new vocabulary from a book/story they are currently reading; example, The Tale of Despereaux.
2) After students have completed their initial reading of a chapter or the book, introduce the SAVOR grid.
3) Model the concept by giving several examples.
4) Have the students complete each grid space with either a plus (+) or minus (-), based on whether the term has the trait listed across the top of the grid.
