Vocabulary knowledge is something that grows gradually over time. Even as adults, we are introduced to new terms. As students first encounter a word they don't know, it's almost as if they store it in a special spot in their brains. Then, the more they hear/read/see/say it, the more knowledge is added to where this word is stored in this spot. Words that are stored with the most knowledge are words that are tended to be used in writing and speaking most often.
There are many words students see in ELA, math, Science, and their history classes. Sometimes these words have the same meanings, or sometimes one subject's meaning could slightly differ from the others meaning of the word. Providing students with information about a word's meaning is an important part of vocabulary instruction.
