Vocabulary Fun! Wordplay and The Great Word Race are fun vocabulary games your students will enjoy. The friendly competition of both will encourage your students to dig deep into their individual vocabulary banks. Use them with your entire class, in small groups, for fast finishers or in a station.
Wordplay is a set of 30 cards, each with 5 consonants and 3 vowels. Students compete to see how many words they can make with the designated letters. I like to put one under the doc camera when we have a few extra minutes. I’ve also placed one at my guided reading table for a quick warm up before a lesson. A small treat for the winner is always enjoyed!
The Great Word Race is a game of categories. Students must stretch their thinking to fill in as many words as they can for each category. There are 10 different versions in this packet.
I’ve also included two other games my students enjoy….Newspaper Detective and Chart It! Both require very little prep and are always big hits.

Toolbox Tip: Do you have science or social studies content vocabulary to teach. Challenge students to draw a picture symbolizing the assigned words. The challenge? The picture must be a unified scene.
