STUDENT SAMPLE ATTACHED-This interactive language arts vocabulary journal is designed to incorporate the following elements: spelling, parts of speech, usage, synonyms, antonyms, drawing and writing. The teacher has the flexibility to choose grade-level appropriate, thematic, novel-based or non-fiction text words. There are multiple sections of this unit in which students will be working in partners or groups to accomplish a variety of tasks as well as peer editing the final writing portion of this journal. The proactive journal encourages students to work towards a goal, giving the teacher time to walk around and monitor progress while spending additional time with struggling students. The final page of this journal addresses the writing element which asks students to use the vocabulary words in some type of story or short essay. The teacher can direct the writing towards the Common Core Standards which are asking for higher level types of writing responses from students. This journal addresses multiple student learning modalities and has proven to be an excellent year-long activity. Suggested teacher tips are given for implementation of this journal.
