Vocabulary Ladders are an excellent way for students to practice listening and speaking along with quick thinking skills.
Put your students in pairs. Give one student LADDER A and the other LADDER B. Each page has two ladders: the left ladder indicates what the student will HEAR and the right ladder indicates what the student will SAY. The student with ladder A begins on the top right by saying the word in the box with the asterisk. Student B listens carefully and finds that word he/she HEARS on the left ladder. When student B finds the word he/she heard, he/she SAYS the word on the right ladder that corresponds with the same space on the left ladder (the word right beside the word he/she heard). The game continues with Student A finding the word he/she heard on the left ladder and then saying the word that corresponds on the right.
The game is over when the students end up at the asterisk. I like to have students practice several times and then compete to see who can "climb the ladder" the fastest.
This ladder has one student SAYING full sentences and the second student quickly finding the sentence with OBJECT PRONOUNS that corresponds.
