Students need to learn new vocabulary, whether to understand a text, to prepare for assessments, or to improve their writing.

Research tells us that students need to be exposed to words in multiple and varied ways. We also know that to truly learn, they need to do more active thinking, rather than just passive learning. The stations on this file will allow them to learn vocabulary in a variety of active ways:

Option One:
a) Vocabulary in Action – at this station students will either use vocabulary words in original sentences, or in their own writing assignments. (You will need to provide your own vocabulary words for this station).

b) Vocabulary in Context – here students will guess the meaning of the word based on its context in a sentence. (I have provided six task sheets with vocabulary words for this station, as well as an editable template).

c) Parts of Speech Sorting – this station has students sort words that are provided into the correct parts of speech; then, they must use them in original sentences. (I have included ten options for this, as well as an editable task card so you can add your own vocabulary words).

d) Vocabulary Raps, Rhymes & Jingles – here students will have a little fun, creating rhymes to help them remember definitions. (You will need to provide your own vocabulary words for this station).

e) Synonym & Antonym Stations – students will look up definitions, then find synonyms and antonyms for the words to use in an original sentence. (You will need to provide your own vocabulary words for this station).

f) Reading & Predicting – This station has two options: students can look up words they have recorded from their reading, or read at the station and look up words.

g) Choosing the Best Words – Use this station if students are working on a piece of writing. They can spend their time at the station improving their word choice.

Option Two:
Definition Stations: Sometimes the traditional method is the one that works best. This file includes six different station titles that you can set up. Spread the vocabulary words you want your students to learn around the stations and divide the class into groups. Send each group to a station and give them 10-15 minutes per station (vocabulary words are not included).

Vocabulary Headers for Posters: Print these and adhere them to pieces of chart paper, to create posters that you can use for active vocabulary building. (See instructions in file).

In this file you will find station titles, task cards, and task sheets, as well as editable cards so you can add tasks or modify the questions.
