This document includes 10 vocabulary lists with 30 words on each list and is perfect for a level 1 French high school French class.
You will notice that the right side of the chart is empty - this is where the students should fill in the English (or any target language) equivalent of the French word. From the first day of class to the end of the semester, I use this as a way to TEACH them vocabulary and grammatical concepts.
The words are intentionally 'random' as studies show that students will actually struggle to recall and distinguish vocabulary words when they learn them grouped. There is also a mix of parts of speech on each list and we would go over how to tell the part of speech just by looking at the word. For example, in the first week of class I would spend at least one class period simply teaching why some of the words had le, la, l', or les in front of them. This is a great way to refresh the students on what a noun is (sounds crazy, I know) and then to introduce the concept of gender/number, which is brand new for most Anglophones. We would then talk about verbs and expressions and eventually adjectives and adverbs.
I should also note that in the first few lists, the verbs are given in the formal/plural command (vous) form. Eventually, around list 5, all verbs will be given in the infinitive. This is because at that point, they will have learned about infinitives and conjugating.
If you would like to know more about how I utilize this vocabulary class in my world language classroom (games, oral practice, and quizzing), please don't hesitate to contact me.
