This card set contains 80 game cards that you can use to teach and practice understanding word synonyms and antonyms while you play a game of WAR (popular card game). There are 40 synonym pairs and 40 antonym pairs included in this deck.
Set up game cards and divide deck into 2 equal parts. Model the target activity. Explain: "Each card has 2 words. You need to tell me if the 2 words on the card are synonyms or antonyms of each other. (Review meaning of "synonym" and "antonym" as needed). Explain how the game of WAR works. Each player places a card from their deck face-up in the middle. The person who has the higher card wins both cards. If the cards are equal, then the players have a "war". Place three cards face-down in the line and then one card face-up. The person with the higher card wins all the cards. As students take turns, have each player tell whether the words on their cards are synonyms or antonyms. If there are more than 2 players, then create teams and have students pass their deck of cards down to their teammates as you play.
