Are you looking for an engaging and effective way to help your students learn academic vocabulary beyond memorizing definitions? This activity allows students to dig deeper into content based vocabulary by sorting words into essential categories. This product includes two editable versions of a Google Slide presentation where students will have the opportunity to sort their unit of study vocabulary into the social studies categories of "Political," Economic," Geographic," and "Social" while justifying their decisions.
This activity allows students to perfect their categorizing skills, processing and analyzing skills, justification skills, self-reflection skills, and technology skills. This activity can be easily modified to work with academic vocabulary for other disciplines such as math, language arts, and science just by editing/changing the categories. It can be graded easily by awarding credit to students if they were able to give a reasonable justification for why they sorted a word as they did since many words can fall under more than one category.
Included in this download is two different versions of the PEGS sort, one with an introduction activity that allows students to reflect upon prior knowledge of the words and the other with directions for a picture/word match activity (you would have to separately provide word and picture cards based on your vocabulary words.) Also included is a completed student example.
You will need to "Make a Copy" of the two versions of the PEGS sort in order for them to be editable. When I assign this to students I assign it through Google Classroom and choose "Make a Copy for Each Student" so it automatically makes them their own personal copy to work on.
