Product Description
Using context to predict or infer the meaning of the word is an important skill for ESL and EFL students, as well as ELA students. This worksheet helps students practice that skill as they read. First. they write down the word. Then they write down the context sentence, before trying to predict what the word means. It's easy for students to do this worksheet on their own, so they can practice guessing word meaning as they read at home as well as in class.

However, this activity also encourages students to distinguish between words they need to know the meaning of, and those they don't. Some ESL students, in particular, have to look ever new word up in the dictionary. That wastes time and interferes with extensive reading. The Teacher Notes to this activity encourage you to model figuring out how much you really need to know about a word to keep reading a text.

Practice, practice, practice in class, then follow-up by reminding them of it every time they read.
