This student self-evaluation checklist is designed specifically for 4th Grade students. It uses the Reading vocabulary for our district and NY State Language Arts curriculum. The activity is based on Robert Marzano's program "Building Academic Vocabulary". Basically, I use this same checklist multiple times throughout the year. Each time the kids self-evaluate, I have them use a different color pen/marker. They read each word (which are all vocabulary words they will learn throughout the year) and they have to check off a box to note their understanding of the word (I know it, I've heard of it, or Don't know it yet). If they know what it means, then they proceed to the last box in the row and write a definition for that word. I also let them draw a definition or example if they can. This is a wonderful activity to get them talking about words and grade-level specific vocabulary. We keep the completed charts in our vocabulary notebooks, and come back periodically to update our understanding and see what new words they can now define. You could easily take this document, delete my words, and insert your own grade level specific words! The kids really enjoy tracking their progress on this chart!
