This resource allows students to list up to 15 vocabulary words. Explicit instructions for how to perform the sort, and a detailed example (atoms and subatomic particles because that's often familiar content from 6th or 7th grade up) are provided. The template allows students to sort their words (manipulatives) into two separate groups that they then label based on the sort characteristic. After this, they can further sort their vocabulary terms into three, and then four separate groups. Space is provided for students to share their justifications for how they sorted their terms. This tool can be done independently or in small groups. It can also serve as a pre- and/or post-assessment.
