If you're like me, vocabulary is something I am always trying to remind myself to fit into my reading lessons. I often discuss vocabulary, but struggled with having students record the vocabulary they independently discover while reading. I began using these with specific words from each section of the text, each student was given a different word to become an 'expert' on to teach the group. These were then glued into their response logs. I then moved on to using these independently after teaching the strategy of how to use them, and students brought unknown words they found and problem solved to discover the meeting. These brought great conversation to my reading groups, and easily taught new vocabulary. When first using these, I modeled using a dictionary and using context clues to discover the meaning of an unknown word. I kept a basket of these that students could also take as needed during reading.
