This double-sided adaptation of vocabulary squares allows students to use this resource as a tool for studying their vocabulary words by folding along the dotted lines. For example, students can choose to view only the "Synonym" column or "Symbol" column to test themselves on the vocabulary words, which remain unseen because of the folds. Teachers may assign eight words per graphic organizer (four on each side), which students will write/copy down the center column.
In addition, the directions for each cell not only make expectations clear to students for how to complete the assignment, but also provides multiple options for completion such as paraphrase for synonym or sentence for symbol (picture). It also allows students to gauge their prior knowledge or "Knowledge Level" of the word, to measure their progress as they continue studying, interacting with, and learning the word.
As an academic vocabulary resource, this graphic organizer can be used for almost any content area that introduces new vocabulary.
