This double-sided adaptation of vocabulary squares allows students to practice using context clues as they interact with unfamiliar words they encounter in texts. Students can select words with which they are unfamiliar or are unsure of their definitions from an elective reading book or books they are reading in class. Generally, if students are unable to find words they do NOT know in an elective reading book, I suggest they find a slightly more challenging book.
In addition, the directions for each cell make expectations clear to students for how to complete the assignment. It also allows students to gauge their prior knowledge or "Knowledge Level" of the word, to measure their progress as they continue studying, interacting with, and learning the word.
As an academic vocabulary resource, this graphic organizer can be used for almost any content area in which students encounter new words in the text they are reading.
