Included in this product are 18 ways to teach students to use different clues when reading to figure out words they don’t know.
Each mini poster measures about 5.5 X 8.5 inches with two strategies per sheet. Each strategy provides an example and a tip. There are visuals on most of the strategies. I made Synonym Clues and Antonym Clues which are the same as contrast clues and comparison clues but I wanted you to have both depending on what language you use with your kids.
The following strategies are part of this product:
-using text features
-connect to other words
-use a known word part
-read around the word
-say it out loud
-multiple meanings (especially helpful for ELLs)
-use prefixes and suffixes
-use part of speech clue
-Bold or italicized words
-inference or general clues
As you can see there are more strategies than you need! However, by getting them all you have your bases covered if you change grades! This also allows you to differentiate for all your learners!
Introduce a few at a time and display them so that your kids have a quick visual reference. In no time, you will have them all up and the kids will be on their way to figuring out those words that trip us us—without our help!
The two-sided bookmark features the following strategies:
*reread or read on for clues
*check the picture or visualize
*use a known part
*make a connection to other words you know
*use text features
*say it out loud
*general or inference clues
*synonyms & antonym clues
*parts of speech clues
**Note not all the clues from the posters are on the bookmark.
I am sure this will benefit ALL your readers!
