As teachers, we are constantly looking for strategies that will capture and hold the attention of our students. Tachistoscopes are just such a strategy!
They are a tool I have used for many years when teaching vocabulary for any subject area.
Just what is a tachistoscope?
A true tachistoscope is a device that displays an image for a specific amount of time. It can be used to increase recognition speed and also for testing purposes.
The “tachistoscopes" presented here are modeled after this apparatus but greatly simplified.
Students love studying vocabulary words using tachistoscopes for several reasons:
-they are visually attractive and appealing, as opposed to worksheet,,
-they can be used for independent as well as cooperative activities,
-they are a break from the usual textbook, or wrote memory, and
-since students have invested time and energy in making their tachistoscope, they develop a sense of ownership in them.
I hope you and your students will enjoy using these tools for teaching.
I would appreciate your feedback.
