Product Description
If you are looking for a fun and motivating way for your students to choose "fancy" words to replace those plain words when they write, then you will love this "Fancy Word Wall" resource. It is a fun way to expand and enhance vocabulary!

My first graders LOVED this synonym lesson and I am sure your students will love it too!

Before we start, I usually read a "Fancy Nancy" book during shared reading to encourage "FANCY THINKING" and to motivate the idea that there are many words we can use that mean the same but are fancier.

Here are Some Ideas for Use:

Read a book with fancy vocabulary. Then give partners the starburst sheets included in this packet to brainstorm words that mean the same as the word in the star. I would model one together with the whole class to make sure that everyone understands the directions.  make sure you have some thesauruses in your classroom and you have pre-taught how to use them.

Share out the words and meanings and have your students write the words in pencil on the sticks (since it is for a word wall, check their spelling) then trace the word with different fancy colored markers and decorate the stick.
After the sticks are completed, have students place their stick in the correct library card holder.  I have these prewritten and if more ideas come up , simply add more holders.

⭐Another idea is to place a thesaurus in the word wall area and a few Fancy Nancy books for motivation.  The children then work with partners to come up with fancy words to replace the plain words in the starburst included in this packet. Then these are also displayed.  i have done this as an independent station with the idea that they use pencil so if the word is misspelled we can erase it and fix it before placing onto the word wall.

⭐During free time or anytime the students do not have any assigned work, they can make fancy word sticks with colored sticks and write the word on the stick from the thesaurus in pencil, show it to me for approval of spelling and then trace with markers that are in the word wall station.
They decorate the sticks with pom-poms, glitter sticker stars or whatever else I have put in the station.  After they complete the stick, they place it into the correct pocket, which have been pre-made.

⭐I then encourage the students to use the “Fancy” Word Wall for words in their writing.  I also have students fill in the worksheets included in this packet as a Word Work Station.

Here is What is Included:

⭐10 Star burst sheets with space to come up with 4 synonyms and space to add more if needed.

1 blank starburst sheet to write other words you may want to use for this activity.

2 sheets with predetermined words to replace the plain word with a word form the Fancy Word Wall and use the fancy word in a sentence. This can be an independent station.

1 blank sheet for students to use to write their own plain words and then replace with a fancy word and use them in sentences.

Here are the Plain Words Include:

⭐ good, pretty, big, small, yummy, scared, mad, fun, crazy, happy

⭐ Some words you might want to write in the starburst that are not included: walk, look, said and I am sure you can think of many others.
