What is a vocabulary talk?
A vocabulary talk is an activity to get your students talking about new vocabulary they may encounter in an upcoming story. By using real pictures, words, and student friendly sentences students can learn new words in a fun and interactive way. Students in a small group setting start with a picture, discuss what they notice, any connections they may have to the picture, and think of words to go with the picture. As a whole group the class will match up words with pictures. This is especially helpful for English language learners!
These vocabulary talks are ideal to use with the following stories:
Flowers by Vijaya Khisty Bodach
Nature Spy by Shelley Rotner and Ken Kreisler
Animal Babies in Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace
Jack and the Beanstalk by Mary Ann Hoberman
You might also centers and morning work to go with these stories too!
