As a way to teach vocabulary more effectively, I began to study Marzano's 6 steps of vocabulary instruction. I wanted to make something that was easy and engaging for my students. This is a fun and simple way to practice up to 8 vocabulary words. This tri-fold includes:
Title page- Have students write the story title and the vocabulary words for the week on the front flap.
Definitions- Give the students the definition of the word and have them write it in their own words.
Pictures- Have students draw a non-linguistic picture of the word.
Word study- Have students find relationships within words such as finding synonyms and antonyms, breaking the word apart into prefixes/suffixes, or any word sorts.
Student discussion- students write down vocabulary words and discuss with a partner, using the vocabulary word in a sentence.
Play review games- A list of possible games to play is listed, or students can come up with their own.
