Product Description: Vocabulary Unit on The Great Gatsby
This folder includes all the materials you need for a comprehensive vocabulary unit to accompany F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. This unit is appropriate for college-bound students in grades 10, 11, or 12.
The folder includes the following:
1) A list of 44 words, including their parts of speech and definitions. Page numbers are given and refer to the Scribner’s edition published in 2004 (ISBN:978-0-7432-7356-5).
2) An 80-slide Power Point presentation that presents each vocabulary word in the sentence in which it first occurs in Gatsby. In addition to the sentences and definitions, the presentation includes additional information on word roots, suggestions about the connotations of some words, and thought questions meant to consider the words in the context of the novel. While many teachers will be pressed for time and may not be able to spend time discussing every question in detail, this presentation is flexible. Because it includes the original sentences from the novel, the presentation can double as a close reading activity. The words appear in the presentation in the same order they appear in the novel.
3) A 40-question quiz on the vocabulary words. The quiz includes four matching sections. On two sections, students will match words and definitions; on the other two, they will match words to blanks in sentences.
4) An answer key for the quiz.
I am in the process of creating many vocabulary units using this model. I welcome your feedback, which I will use to improve this product and others like it. If you would like a similar unit to go along with another text, please let me know and I will assemble it for you if I can.
